Cerazette

Desogestrel 75mcg

Cerazette is another effective POP that offers flexibility. It can be taken at varying times each day, making it a convenient choice for busy lifestyles while still providing excellent contraceptive protection.

Cerazette, a progestogen-only pill containing desogestrel, works by thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg and, in most cases, suppressing ovulation—a mechanism not consistently achieved by traditional mini pills. This dual action makes it more effective than the mini pill. Its longer 12-hour missed-pill window and higher rates of amenorrhea also contribute to improved contraceptive reliability.

The Plus Points

Cerazette must be taken within a 12-hour window. It offers better bleeding control rates than the mini pill. Additionally, it can serve as an unlicensed option for endometrial protection in hormone replacement therapy.

The Downfalls

Cerazette was  unfunded, requiring users to pay out of pocket.  From 1st April 2025 will be funded. While it provides more effective contraceptive protection than the mini pill—thanks to a 12-hour missed-pill window and higher rates of amenorrhea (no bleeding)—it still comes with potential drawbacks. Irregular bleeding, prolonged or absent periods, mood changes, headaches, breast tenderness, acne, and decreased libido are possible side effects. Additionally, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections and may not be suitable for those sensitive to hormonal changes.

The Prescription

To take Cerazette, you need to take one pill every day at the same time, without a break between packs. If you start Cerazette on days 1-5 of your period, you're immediately protected. If you start it at any other time, you should use additional contraception, such as condoms, for the first 48 hours. If you miss a pill, take it as soon as you remember, and continue taking your pills at the usual time, even if it means taking two pills in one day. If you are more than 12 hours late, the pill may not be effective, and you should use extra contraception for the next 7 days.
