Contraception

Contraception prevents pregnancy. There are non-hormonal and hormonal forms of contraception. The non-hormonal ways include the rhythm method (understanding the fertile phase ie when pregnancy can occur), barrier methods eg condoms, and the copper intrauterine device. Hormonal methods include the pill, contraceptive rods, injectables and also the progestin-releasing intrauterine device (Mirena and Jaydess).

  • Help! I need an emergency copper IUD.

Absolutely - we know that this is a stressful situation to be in.  Please fill in the registration form ASAP AND give us a call on 0272735590.  We prioritise these cases as we know that it is a time-sensitive situation to be in.  If you are worried about the fees, please still talk to us, as your health is our priority (and we know it is logistically challenging to access such procedures in a time pressured situation)

  • My IUD strings have gone missing. Can you help?

When an IUD’s strings are not visible, it doesn’t necessarily mean the device is lost or embedded—it often just requires a closer look.  This is how we approach removal when the strings are missing:

    Step 1: Check Again

    • Sometimes the strings are simply curled up inside the cervix or tucked against the vaginal wall.
    • A trained eye can often spot a tiny millimeter of string with careful inspection.

Step 2: Try to Retrieve the Strings

    • Using a small brush can help tease out hidden strings.
    • A string retriever or long forceps may be needed if the strings are slightly higher up.
    • This can be straightforward with some tips and tricks, but sometimes it just can’t be done.
    • The process can be uncomfortable, so we would take it carefully and offer pain relief etc

Step 3: Next Steps if Strings Can’t Be Found

    • An ultrasound may be needed to confirm the IUD’s position.
    • If retrieval in the clinic isn’t possible, a hysteroscopy may be required.
    • I am able to provide a referral or recommend other providers with more equipment if further steps are needed.

    Need a Second Opinion?

If your IUD strings are missing and you're unsure what to do next, I’m happy to provide a second opinion. Fill in a form to find out more and we will give you a call, as cases are reviewed and supported individually.

The art of medicine

Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCPs)

OCPs often find themselves in the spotlight for negative reasons. When we reflect on their history, it's clear that they have empowered women to make informed decisions about pregnancy and take control of their reproductive futures. This is truly extraordinary! Today, they continue to provide users with a range of options, not only related to pregnancy but also in managing the impact of hormones on overall well-being. However, as I remind all my patients, hormones and the menstrual cycle can lead to side effects, making it difficult to achieve a state of perfection. What is often overlooked, though, is the extensive array of options available.

This page serves to empower you with those choices.

The various categories of pills:

In general terms, there are progesterone-only pills and those that contain both progesterone and estrogen. From a scientific perspective, the correct term would be progestin-only pills, as they all include synthetic progesterone known as progestin.

A key distinction between the two is that estrogen is inadvisable for individuals with migraines, blood clots, and certain other medical conditions. Consequently, POPs are often the preferred option.
