Noriday

Norethisterone 350mcg

Noriday is a popular choice among women looking for a reliable progesterone-only option. Taken daily, it helps prevent ovulation and thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.

The mini pill, also known as the progestogen-only pill, works primarily by thickening cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus and fertilize an egg. It also alters the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of implantation. In some individuals, the mini pill may suppress ovulation, but this effect is not consistent across all users. To be effective, it must be taken daily at the same time, as its contraceptive protection relies on maintaining consistent hormone levels.

The Plus Points

The mini pill Noriday (norethisterone) is a progestogen-only contraceptive that provides reliable pregnancy prevention without estrogen, making it suitable for those who cannot take combined hormonal contraception. For some, it may also help manage heavy or painful periods.

This can be used alongside hormone replacement therapy as part of hormone replacement therapy.  Because the norethisterone is such a small dose another progestogen is needed to protect the endometrial lining.

The Downfalls

The mini pill Noriday (norethisterone) has some limitations. It requires strict timing, as taking it more than three hours late reduces its effectiveness. Users may experience irregular bleeding, spotting, or a complete absence of periods. Common side effects include mood changes, headaches, breast tenderness, and acne. Unlike some other contraceptive options, it is less effective at managing heavy bleeding and offers no protection against sexually transmitted infections.

The mini pill works really well for some people, but if it isn't working for you, I have a low threshold to change it!

The Prescription

1. Daily Timing

  • Take one pill every day at the same time.
  • Timing is crucial; a delay of more than 3 hours  reduces effectiveness.

2. It is taken daily with no breaks

  •  There is no pill-free interval; start a new pack immediately after finishing the current one.

3. Starting NoridayIf starting on day 1-5 of your period, you're protected immediately.

  • If starting at another time, use additional contraception (e.g., condoms) for the first 2 days.

4. Missed Pills

  • If you’re more than 3 hours late, take the missed pill as soon as possible and use extra contraception for the next 2 days.

5. Other Considerations

  • Take the pill with water; food is not required.
  • If vomiting or diarrhea occurs within 2 hours of taking it, another pill should be taken.
